Octamercapto POSS (HS-POSS) is an organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterial featuring a silsesquioxane cage core with eight mercaptopropyl functional groups (-CH₂CH₂CH₂NH₂) attached to its corners. While most of the cages had a (SiO₁.₅)₈ core, some cages with a (SiO₁.₅)₁₀ or (SiO₁.₅)₁₂ core were also present.
This hybrid molecule combines the robust inorganic Si-O-Si cage structure with the high reactivity of thiol groups, enabling applications in click chemistry, polymer crosslinking, and surface functionalization. Its molecular structure provides excellent chemical reactivity, thermal stability, and interfacial modification capabilities, making it widely used in polymer reinforcement, surface modification, and functional material development.

The thiol groups in HS-POSS are highly reactive and capable of participating in a variety of chemical reactions, such as thiol-ene click chemistry, Michael addition, or crosslinking with polymers and metal surfaces. This reactivity makes it compatible with a broad range of materials, including epoxy, acrylic, and rubber systems, where it can serve as a crosslinking agent or surface modifier.
Polymer Modification: Enhances crosslinking density and heat resistance of polyolefins or epoxy resins via thiol-ene click reactions.
Surface Modification: Acts as a coupling agent to improve interfacial bonding between fillers (e.g., silica) and polymer matrices, suitable for rubber and composites.
Functional Coatings: Used to prepare antioxidant or antibacterial coatings, improving material durability.
