n-Octyltrimethoxysilane is an organosilane compound with the chemical formula C₁₂H₂₆O₃Si. It consists of an octyl group (C₈H₁₇) attached to a silicon atom with three methoxy groups (-OCH₃).
Key aspects of n-octyltrimethoxysilane:
Octyl Group (C₈H₁₇): An alkyl chain that can influence the properties of the compound.
Trimethoxysilane Group (-Si(OCH₃)₃): Contains three methoxy groups that can undergo hydrolysis to form silanol groups for adhesion and bonding.

1.n-Octyltrimethoxysilane can be used as a surface modifier to generate hydrophobicity (e.g. on concrete, glass, inorganic pigment, or mineral fillers)
2.When diluted with an appropriate solvent, n-Octyltrimethoxysilane can be used in the formulation of water repellent products.
3.Upon proper application, the formulated product will penetrate and provide water repellency by chemically reacting with the cementitious substrate. Treated substrates are hydrophobic and retain their original appearance.
